Que comprendre de ces inscriptions énigmatiques truffées de références à la culture populaire et à un monde interlope ? Sans doute une souffrance exprimée depuis l’intériorité d’une personne. Par la publication de cet ouvrage, Les Éditions du Renard souhaitent réaffirmer leur désir de publier des œuvres photographiques dont le déploiement sous forme de livre s’inscrit à même l’essence de leur propos. Dans le cas d’Ammoniaque, les images, regroupées sous plusieurs chapitres qui suivent chronologiquement le parcours de l’artiste, génèrent une réflexion à propos de l’effacement de la parole de personnes marginalisées dans le débat social. Ici, on découvre un quartier où les enjeux de la narcoprostitution demeurent bien présents, et ce, malgré une gentrification manifeste. Le titre Ammoniaque, pour sa part, rappelle la présence de l’odorante usine Lallemand, située dans l’ouest du quartier, que certains groupes citoyens considèrent comme dangereuse et potentiellement toxique. Dans un style brut et direct, les images de l’artiste témoignent des cris étouffés de celles et ceux qui choisissent de se faire entendre autrement que par des voix officielles. Une série de poèmes dactylographiés, dont la présentation graphique rappelle les inscriptions photographiées, accompagne la série d’images. Ces textes appellent aussi au déchiffrement attentif des mots et au décryptage du sens à leur attribuer. What is there to understand, from these enigmatic inscriptions riddled with references to popular culture and an underworld, except the clear suffering of a person willing to speak out ? With the publication of this work, Les Éditions du Renard wish to reaffirm their desire to publish photographic works whose deployment in book form is in keeping with the essence of their purpose. In the case of Ammoniaque, the images, grouped under several chapters that follow the artist’s journey chronologically, generate a reflection on the erasure of the voice of the marginalized in the social debate. We discover a neighborhood where the stakes of narcoprostitution remain very present, and this, in spite of the gentrification that is evident there. The title Ammoniaque, for its part, recalls the presence of the odorous Lallemand factory, located in the western part of the neighborhood, which some citizen groups consider dangerous and potentially toxic. In a raw and direct style, the artist’s images bear witness to the muffled cries of those who choose to make themselves heard in ways other than through the official voices of social engagement. A series of typewritten poems, whose graphic style is reminiscent of the photographed inscriptions, accompany the series of images. These texts also call for a careful deciphering of the words and the meaning to be attributed to them.
